Privacy policy

Privacy matters, especially when someone is missing.

FindThem is operated by a non-profit team with a simple purpose: help families and communities share missing-person information responsibly. This policy explains what information we handle, why we handle it, and the choices available to you.

Our approach.

We do not sell personal information. We limit public case information to what is useful for locating a missing person and keep account, contact, tip, moderation, and security information away from public case pages unless it is intentionally published for a legitimate purpose.

01

Information we collect

Depending on how you use FindThem, we may process:

  • Account information, such as your name, email address, optional phone number, authentication details, and account settings.
  • Missing-person case information, including the person's name, photographs, age or date information, physical description, last-seen information, circumstances, case status, and other details submitted for review.
  • Private tips and reports, including the content of a tip, optional sender contact information, abuse reports, and related moderation records.
  • Communications, including messages sent through our contact form, account notices, support correspondence, and email-delivery records needed to operate the service.
  • Technical and security information, such as session information, IP-derived security records, request metadata, anti-abuse signals, audit records, and information needed to prevent spam, fraud, or unauthorized access.
02

What may appear publicly

An approved missing-person case may display information intended to help the public recognize or locate the person. This can include approved photographs, name, age information, general last-seen details, physical description, and case status.

Account passwords, private account details, private tips, internal moderation notes, authentication credentials, and security records are not displayed on public missing-person pages. Submitters should not include home addresses, identity-document numbers, financial information, medical records, or other unnecessary sensitive information in public case text.

03

How we use information

We use information only where reasonably necessary to operate and protect the platform, including to:

  • create and manage accounts;
  • review, publish, update, withdraw, and moderate missing-person cases;
  • deliver private tips to authorized users or staff;
  • respond to support, safety, privacy, and account requests;
  • send service-related email notifications;
  • detect abuse, spam, impersonation, unauthorized access, and misuse;
  • maintain appropriate audit, moderation, and security records; and
  • improve reliability and understand how the service is functioning.
04

Authentication, cookies and connected sign-in

FindThem uses essential session technology so signed-in users can securely access their accounts. These cookies or similar session records are used for authentication and security rather than advertising.

Where Google sign-in or account linking is available, we process the information needed to authenticate you and associate the provider account with your FindThem account. Provider passwords are not provided to FindThem. A connected sign-in method may be removable where another usable sign-in method remains available.

05

Private tips and sensitive information

Tips submitted through the platform are intended for authorized case owners and appropriate FindThem staff, not for public publication. A tip may contain sensitive whereabouts information, so users should avoid reposting it publicly or acting on it in a way that could place a missing person, witness, family member, or reporter at risk.

Immediate danger?

Contact the appropriate local emergency service or law-enforcement authority. FindThem is not an emergency-response service.

06

Children and vulnerable people

Missing-person cases can involve children or vulnerable adults. We ask submitters to provide only information that is reasonably necessary to help locate the person. Do not upload intimate images, school schedules, private addresses, financial details, confidential medical information, or other material that could create additional risk unless there is a compelling and lawful reason and the information is appropriate for publication.

We may remove, restrict, redact, or decline information where publication could create unnecessary safety or privacy risks.

07

Storage, retention and security

We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards designed to protect platform information. No online system can guarantee absolute security, and users should use strong passwords, protect their devices, and report suspected unauthorized access promptly.

We retain information for as long as reasonably necessary for platform operation, safety, moderation, dispute handling, legal obligations, and legitimate record-keeping. Closing an account or requesting deletion does not necessarily require immediate removal of every moderation, security, audit, or case record where retention is justified or required.

08

When information may be shared

We may disclose limited information where reasonably necessary:

  • to infrastructure, email, authentication, anti-abuse, or other service providers that help operate FindThem;
  • to authorized users involved in a case, where the platform is designed to provide that information to them;
  • to comply with a valid legal requirement or protect the rights, safety, or security of a person or the platform; or
  • with your direction or consent.

We do not sell personal information or operate the service as a marketplace for personal data.

09

Your choices and privacy requests

Depending on the law that applies to you, you may have rights to request access, correction, export, restriction, objection, deletion, or other treatment of personal information. FindThem also provides account tools for certain profile updates, exports, and deletion requests.

A request may require identity or account verification. We may also need to preserve information where deleting it would conflict with safety needs, moderation integrity, legal obligations, active disputes, or legitimate platform-security requirements.

For a privacy question or request, use our Contact page.

10

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the service, legal requirements, or our operating practices change. The date at the top of this page shows the most recent revision. Material changes may also be communicated through the service where appropriate.

If you do not agree with a material change, you may stop using the service and use the available account or privacy-request tools.
